Why
your SAT score is Important
|
|
Your
SAT score is reviewed
by admissions departments
and even some future employers.
It is a major factor in
the following areas:
- In
the admissions process:
At most schools the
SAT is one of the most
important factors in
the admissions process
since the test is designed
to measure the academic
skills many schools
believe are the most
important for academic
success in college.
Schools also place a
great emphasis on your
score because tests
like the SAT are the
only standard, or "objective"
measures for all applicants
- SAT scores can be
compared directly as
opposed to GPAs from
different high schools.
-
In
obtaining
academic scholarships:
SAT scores can
greatly boost your
chances of obtaining
highly competitive
and limited academic
scholarships which
are usually based
in part on SAT scores.
With soaring college
tuition, nothing is
sweeter than money
you don't have to
pay back.
-
In
landing the best summer
internships:
Like colleges, many
employers rely on
the SAT in differentiating
among applicants.
In some of the more
competitive summer
internships employers
may only interview
those with a minimum
SAT - in the 90th
percentile, or higher,
for example.
-
In
the college rankings
process:
Since the average
SAT of admitted
applicants is one
of the factors in
the college rankings
process, many schools
may view a higher
average as a way
to increase their
respective rankings.

SAT
Description
|
|
The SAT is a standardized
test used by universities
and colleges to compare
and either admit or reject
applicants. The test is
over 3 hours long and contains
three main sections: Critical
Reading, Math, and Writing.
Each section of the SAT
is scored on a scale of
200-800, and the writing
section will contain two
sub-scores. The SAT is typically
taken by high school juniors
and seniors. It is administered
seven times a year in the
U.S., Puerto Rico, and US
Territories, and six times
a year overseas.
Test
Section Order
The 25-minute essay will
always be the first section
of the SAT, and the 10-minute
multiple-choice writing
section will always be the
final section. The remaining
six 25-minute sections can
appear in any order, as
can the two 20-minute sections.
Test takers sitting next
to each other in the same
testing session may have
test books with entirely
different sections.
